Not Enough Meaning

We project our current mindset and assumptions onto the past and future

Telescoping effect

Description

The tendency to displace recent events backward in time and remote events forward in time.

Example 1:

When planning a project, a manager might remember a similar past project as being more recent than it was (backward telescoping) or an older project as less distant (forward telescoping), affecting time estimates.

Example 2:

When planning a project timeline based on past projects, a manager might misremember a similar past project as having taken less time (remote event moved forward) or a recent minor delay as being more significant (recent event displaced backward).
