System justification

Description

A social psychology theory that proposes that people have a motivation to defend and bolster the status quo, i.e., to see it as good, fair, legitimate, and desirable.

Example 1:

Employees in a company with a long-standing, inefficient hierarchy might resist changes to the structure, viewing the existing system as inherently stable or fair despite its flaws.

Example 2:

Employees in a company with a highly hierarchical structure and significant pay disparities might defend the system as "fair" or "necessary for order," even if it limits their own advancement opportunities.
