Reverse psychology

Description

A technique involving the assertion of a belief or behavior that is opposite to the one desired, with the expectation that this approach will encourage the subject of the persuasion to do what actually is desired.

Example 1:

A manager, wanting an employee to take initiative on a difficult task, might say, "This task is probably too challenging for you right now," hoping to motivate the employee to prove them wrong.

Example 2:

A manager, wanting an employee to take initiative on a challenging project, might casually mention, "This is probably too difficult for anyone on the team right now," hoping to spur the employee to prove them wrong.
