Reactance

Description

An unpleasant motivational arousal (reaction) to offers, persons, rules, or regulations that threaten or eliminate specific behavioral freedoms. Reactance occurs when a person feels that someone or something is taking away their choices or limiting the range of alternatives.

Example 1:

When a company imposes a strict new policy without consultation, employees might resist it or find ways to circumvent it, not necessarily because the policy is bad, but because they feel their freedom is curtailed.

Example 2:

If employees feel a new company policy is overly restrictive or imposed without consultation, they might resist it or find ways to circumvent it, even if the policy itself is reasonable.
