Peltzman effect

Description

(A specific type of Risk Compensation) The hypothesized tendency of people to react to a safety measure by increasing risky behavior.

Example 1:

If a company implements a very lenient sick leave policy, some employees might take more "mental health days" or call in sick for minor reasons, offsetting some of the intended benefits by increased absenteeism.

Example 2:

Drivers of cars with advanced safety features like anti-lock brakes and airbags might drive faster or more aggressively, offsetting some of the safety benefits. In business, robust backup systems might lead to riskier data handling.
