Neglect of probability

Description

The tendency to completely disregard probability when making a decision under uncertainty.

Example 1:

An employee might be more afraid of a rare, dramatic workplace accident (e.g., a fire) than more common, less sensational risks (e.g., repetitive strain injuries), despite the probability differences.

Example 2:

A company might overinvest in elaborate security measures for a very low-probability, high-impact event (e.g., a specific type of cyberattack) while neglecting more common, less dramatic risks.
