Description

The tendency for people to give preferential treatment to others they perceive to be members of their own groups.

Example 1:

A manager might unconsciously favor employees who attended the same university or share similar hobbies when assigning desirable projects or considering promotions.

Example 2:

A manager might unconsciously give higher performance ratings or better project assignments to team members with whom they share a similar background or alma mater.
