Illusion of external agency

Description

The experience of an action being willed or chosen by oneself is retrospectively attributed to an external agent. (Less common in typical business, more psychopathological).

Example 1:

While less directly applicable to typical business, a highly stressed individual might incorrectly attribute a minor business error they made to "bad luck" or external forces beyond their control, rather than their own oversight.

Example 2:

An employee who consistently fails to meet deadlines might blame external factors like "too many meetings" or "unclear instructions," rather than acknowledging personal time management issues.
