Empathy gap

Description

A cognitive bias that causes people to underestimate the influence of visceral states (e.g., hunger, pain, emotion) on their own or others' behavior or preferences.

Example 1:

Product designers who are not currently experiencing user frustrations with a complex interface may underestimate how difficult and annoying the interface is for actual users.

Example 2:

A well-rested manager struggles to understand why an overworked and stressed employee is making mistakes, underestimating the impact of fatigue on performance.
