Defensive attribution hypothesis

Description

A set of beliefs used as a shield against the fear that one will be the victim or cause of a serious mishap. It may involve blaming the victim for their fate.

Example 1:

Hearing about a competitor's major data breach, a company might overly blame the competitor's negligence to reassure themselves that such an event couldn't happen to them due to their own perceived superior practices.

Example 2:

In analyzing a workplace accident, observers might overly blame the involved employee if the accident was severe, to distance themselves from the possibility that such an event could happen to them.
