Contrast effect

Description

The enhancement or diminishment, relative to normal, of perception, cognition or related performance as a result of successive (immediately previous) or simultaneous exposure to a stimulus of lesser or greater value in the same dimension.

Example 1:

A job candidate interviewed after a series of very poor candidates may be perceived as stronger than they actually are, or vice-versa if preceded by exceptional candidates.

Example 2:

After interviewing an exceptionally strong candidate, subsequent average candidates may appear weaker than they objectively are. Conversely, an average candidate might seem stronger if preceded by several very weak ones.
