Clustering illusion

Description

The tendency to erroneously perceive "streaks" or "clusters" in random sequences of events.

Example 1:

A sales manager might believe a particular region is experiencing a "hot streak" after a few quick sales, leading to over-investment, even if the sales were random occurrences.

Example 2:

A sales manager might believe a particular sales region is "hot" after a few unexpectedly large sales occur in short succession, even if these are just random variations in a stable market.
