Backfire effect

Description

The tendency of some people to resist accepting evidence that conflicts with their beliefs, and to strengthen their support for their original stance when challenged.

Example 1:

When presented with data showing a favored business strategy is underperforming, some executives might become even more entrenched in their support for it, dismissing the contradictory evidence.

Example 2:

Presenting a staunch supporter of an outdated company policy with strong evidence of its ineffectiveness might lead them to defend the policy even more vigorously, rather than reconsidering their position.
