Automation bias

Description

The tendency to depend excessively on automated systems and trust their outputs, potentially leading to errors when the automated system makes a mistake.

Example 1:

Pilots over-relying on an autopilot system and failing to notice when it makes an incorrect decision, or a manager blindly trusting an algorithm's hiring recommendations without critical review.

Example 2:

Pilots over-relying on an autopilot system might be slow to react if the system malfunctions or provides incorrect information, a risk also present in business reliance on AI or automated decision-support tools.
